Ayubu is a Swahili name meaning “Perseverance”. In Swahili culture men and older people command greater respect than women and young people. A man or older person walks in front, is given the best seat and is placed at the front at ceremonies. A young person is expected to stand to greet elders and to listen with humility, never disagreeing. A child is given a “childhood name” usually chosen by a senior relative and an “adult name”. If the eldest child is a boy he is given his paternal grandfather’s name.
